This edition of the chronicles aims to provide a smooth reading experience to bring to life some of the most important events in Canary Island history: the meeting of two cultures, the indigenous and the European, against the dramatic backdrop of a war of conquest which, for the canary islanders meant being forced to renounce their traditions and customs.

The author of this present volume, Carlos Álvarez, has many literary endeavours under his belt, and is also well versed in the period of history surrounding the conquest as some of his publications attest, specifically La pluma del arcángel and La Señora Beatriz de Bobadilla, Señora de Gomera y Fierro.

The result: an accessible text that can be followed and understood easily without needing to check the meanings of words no longer in common usage in Spanish.

The objective: to make it possible for the stories contained in these chronicles to reach more readers, readers who are on the whole keen to learn, but get put off by the arid, repetitive—on occasions boring—style of the original chronicles.
